One Piece's Messages

Finding a Message in One Piece

"If you hurt someone, or they hurt you, the same red blood will be spilled."

It being a Friday, and me being in my room, I decided that I would just relax and watch some episodes of a show I enjoy called One Piece. So I decided that, in light of One Piece reaching it's 1061st chapter, it'd be a good idea for a blog. One Piece is a vast show, and I use that VERY heavily. One Piece has about 1061 chapters, and each one is full of a certain amount of charm. I could sit and give you a summary, but it would take up about 900 pages of this, so I figure it best to make it extremely brief. A man, made of rubber wants to be King of the Pirates, assembles a crew, consisting of a small deer, a skeleton man, and a few others. They battles marines, other pirates, and sea creatures, while searching for a treasure known as the One Piece. However, there is one thing that One Piece does best, and it is to teach a lesson. I know how it sounds, especially considering the summary I just gave, but hear me out for a second.

When considering a show as goofy sounding as One Piece, it's almost understandable why you'd think that no lessons can come from it, hell, not even I thought that there could be any lessons from this goofy show. However, after 1061 chapters, I came to realize how wrong I initially was. Watching One Piece was always something I was initially worried about, because 1061 chapters, and roughly 1030 of those being animated into a show, takes a LONG time to read/watch. Which is why I decided to split it between reading and watching. Out of the episodes I watched, a few of the messages really took shape when thinking about this. One Piece being a show about a pirate made of rubber, I believe it interesting to see themes like this.
Scene

Overall, I had a talk with my roommate, Hans about this scene, as well as a few of my friends, and really brought to life what it meant, not only to me, but to the world we live in today. I told my friend, Colby, that I believed this scene shone a pure light on the issues of racism in our world today, and how no matter what, if you hurt someone, they still shed the same red blood. It stuck out to me, and really made me frown upon how our world is today. Me and my friends talk about One Piece often, and there's plenty more scenes that display clear messages. However, in honesty, I picked this one because, I enjoy the scene immensely, as does my roommate, and my group of friends. Overall, I'd say today was a pretty good day, and after doing this blog, I think I might take up doing it, and do another blog next week. But I guess it will depend on how good this actually is.

  1. I've never watched or read any chapters of One Piece but I'll get around to it one day. I didn't really think you could learn lessons from manga / shows, but I think with longer ones like One Piece where there's lots of room for character development, its easier to add in.

  2. The One Piece! The One Piece is real! I know One Piece has a lot of hopeful messages and is supposed to be good. My friend always reminds me about how GOAT'ed One Piece is. However, I watched one episode with my friend, and I thought that it was terrible. It was supposed to be an important episode too, but there was so little animation and such long pauses that it was not fun to watch. I do like your analysis of One Piece because it kind of reminded me about my thoughts about Attack on Titan and how the last season did its 180 fascism/Germany reenactment.

  3. More of a Naruto guy myself but I can certainly appreciate the immense amount of dedication it takes to get into a show like this. Cannot imagine the amount of time you spent watching/reading One Piece, but I can see it was worth it as you gained lots of insight into the bigger picture lessons that come from the show.

  4. I’ve never gotten into One Piece due to how lengthy it’s gotten. Despite that, it pleases me to know that such a famous anime would promote positive values like that. While viewing the comments on the video, it seemed like your opinion on the scene was a shared sentiment among watchers, myself included. I think what lends itself to such positive feedback is just how universal the statement “we all bleed the same blood” is. While discussion of this stems most popularly from race, many differences between individuals can effectively replace it. It also is clever to highlight the history of violence, in this scenario, rather than their appearances. Attempting the latter may result in accidental associations with the look of minorities and inhuman, monstrous beings. All in all, it’s a great scene, one that gives me pride in the animation industry.
